SILENT WAY

Silent Way is one of the most remarkable method among the 'designer methods'. It is a method of language teaching, originated in 1970s by Caleb Gategno. It is based on the premise that teachers should be silent as much as possible.
It is based on 3 hypothesis ;
1) Discovery
2) Physical Objects
3) Problem Solving
The method argue that teaching should be secondary to learning. The state of mind should be similar to child learning. To achieve this learning there are many artificial objects that can be used in classroom such as Fidel Charts ( color coded chart) and Cuisenaire Rods ( colored wooden rods).
Students need develop their 'inner criteria' without the teacher to be able to make sentences.
The central dimension of language is vocabulary.
- Semi-luxury: they are common expressions used in daily life.
- Luxury: They are used to express abstract ideas such as political and philosophical opinions
- Functional: The words that do not have direct equilavance in L1.
